Closed toilet seat alerts Michigan man to early-morning intruder

TRAVERSE CITY – A closed toilet seat was all a Michigan man needed to know that someone had broken into his house on Saturday, Nov. 25.

According to The Associated Press, the Traverse City man, who lives alone, became suspicious that someone had unlawfully entered his home when he noticed the toilet seat was down during an early-morning trip to the bathroom.

This was odd, the man told Traverse City Police Chief Jeff O’Brien, because he almost always leaves the seat up.  Sure enough, a 26-year-old man was later found passed out, face down in the man’s garage, AP reported.

The intruder also apparently helped himself to cookies, leaving a trail of crumbs for the man to find, and lounged around in the living room before passing out under a picnic table in the garage.  He appeared to be intoxicated and had taken prescription drugs from the home, police said.

The man and the resident don’t know each other, AP reported. Breaking and entering and larceny charges are being pursued.
